The factory Subaru top-mount intercooler on the 02-07 WRX and 04-21 STI was built to a stock power target. The tube-and-fin core is easy to damage on the road and undersized for what these cars actually run when driven hard.

The OVERTAKE Top Mount Intercooler replaces it with a substantially larger all-aluminum bar-and-plate core, cast aluminum end tanks CNC machined and welded to a soldered and pressure-tested core, and inlet geometry designed to match the OEM Y-pipe flow path. This TMIC fits the stock location, stock Y-pipe, stock intake manifold, and stock bypass valve. No tune required.

The Results:

With all other factors the same, the OVERTAKE TMIC was able to maintain ~16°F lower peak intake air temperatures when compared to the factory intercooler. This shows that the greater surface area of the thicker OVERTAKE core is much more effective at mitigating heat soak than the factory unit.

Super impressed with the OVERTAKE TMIC. Fitment was spot on, install was straightforward, and it looks killer under the hood. Definitely feels more consistent under boost, especially compared to the factory intercooler. Great quality piece.

Will there be a need to bend/wrap the AC lines when installing this on an ‘05 SG FXT?

Great question! Generally, if you're running a larger-than-stock TMIC on an SG Forester XT, it's standard to have to move the AC lines a little back and you will have to do the same with our TMIC given the large core size. The good thing is those lines/bracket are decently malleable, so spacing ultimately shouldn't be an issue. In the past, I've also put a little piece of rubber/foam between the lines and intercooler to make sure there's no metal-on-metal rubbing.

Is the black thermal coated? If so with what and what differences do you see under the hood in regards to temps?

Hey Wyatt! The black is not a thermal dispersant coating, but rather a standard powder coat. The most important consideration here is that the fins are doing all the work here for heat transfer. The body and castings are very thick in comparison, so they transfer heat very slowly as their main function is to be a pressure vessel, and the coating on them causes nearly no effect because of this.

The fin rows that see the huge volume of air through your hood scoop, have several inches of fins that are louvered and designed to be turbulent. Their entire purpose is to disrupt the airflow so it bounces off as many surfaces as possible. And because only the very top surface of fins on the core has any powder on them, those too becomes negligible. It would be like treating the intercooler core as being thinner overall by a few tenths of a millimeter, which we find to be negligible. The majority of heat transfer is occurring on the surfaces "inside" of the ambient fin packs on the core.

So knowing that, we also tested them during final validation against uncoated and thermal dispersant coated intercoolers, and found the results to be consistent with the chosen sizing of the fin packs. They performed identically regardless of the coating, because the contribution from the insulation effect on the outer surface is so small it's immeasurable. The overwhelming majority of the heat transfer is done beyond the very outer surface of the core, which is why we choose the type of fin designs we do.

Great question! No, our TMIC does not require a tune at all. You can simply bolt it on and drive. Of course, you would be able to take full advantage of it (increasing boost pressure) that it can handle more efficiently with a tune, but it can still benefit a stock tuned car as well. Lowering IAT's is always a good thing :)
